An Interview with a Process Server

Before a court will hear your case, you must notify the other party that the case has been filed. This is called  “service.” Someone over 18 who is not involved in the case must serve the other party. This can be accomplished by a friend, a family member, or the sheriff. But, perhaps the most hands-off way to arrange service is to hire a private process server. Here at Weinberg & Schwartz, we work closely with private process served Evan Krause of Veritas Process Services, LLC.

We sat down with Evan to talk a little about process serving.

Evan, tell us how you got into this line of work.

While working in a prior job/different industry, I connected with many Attorneys, Paralegals, and Legal Secretaries.  Through those relationships, I constantly heard complaints about their process servers.   I saw a need for efficient dependable service that I was more than able to provide so I made a move.  Fast forward 10 years, I am now working with over a 130 Maryland law firms.

Have you seen any of these reality TV shows about process servers? Do you think they get it right?

C’mon, everything is scripted nowadays.  From the small amount of them that I’ve seen, I’d say its a blatant exaggeration to what I have experienced.  To be honest, the perspective it portrays probably puts actual process servers in danger more than anything.

What does it take to be a great process serve?

Efficiency, Persistence, Planning, Research, People Skills.

What’s your advice to someone being served?

Fight the urge to avoid service.  It will only draw out the situation you are in longer.  I’ve always thought to myself, if I was involved in any type of legal matter, I would absolutely want to be aware of everything going on so that I can proceed and move forward.

Tell us a crazy story from the life of a process sever.

Hmmm, I would say my most memorable service over the years was when a woman in her late eighties answered the door wearing only a tiny sweater.  She was very nice and cordial, but to this day I am still not sure if she was aware her buns were out or if she was just at that point in life that she didn’t have a care in the world.  Needless to say, I was caught off guard that day.

Ha ha! Thanks, Evan!
