How Our Firm Gives Back to our Community

grassroots 3

Something that everyone at Weinberg & Schwartz, LLC has always taken a lot of pride in – whether current or past employees, or whether attorneys or staff members – is taking extra time out of our schedules to give back to those that are less fortunate. Over the years, these volunteer efforts have taken many shapes and put smiles on many people’s faces.

As attorneys, one important way to give back to others is to provide legal services free of charge – sometimes referred to as pro bono work. In family law, pro bono work can take the form of representing a client for free in a divorce, child custody, or child support case. Many of our attorneys take these cases.

Another way our attorney provide free legal services is by volunteering with the Howard County Family Law Assistance Program. Organized by law librarian Sandy Brewer, the Howard County Family Law Assistance program operates out of the law library at the Circuit Court for Howard County and the East Columbia Branch of the Howard County Public Library. This programs allows for individuals who otherwise cannot afford to hire private counsel to meet confidentially with an attorney for 15-20 minute meetings to discuss filing or an ongoing legal matter, review paperwork, or prepare for an upcoming court appearance. Working the Family Law Assistance program is also one of the ways our attorneys end up picking up their pro bono clients.

In addition to providing free legal services to our community, our firm also frequently likes to donate both time and money to local volunteer and non-profit organizations. The National Family Resiliency Center is a local  organization that seeks to help adults and children cope and heal through divorce and other family transitions. Our attorneys often speak on panels for National Family Resiliency Center programs and our firm makes regular donations to them as well.

For several years in a row, our firm would take a day off and serve lunch to the homeless in Baltimore at Our Daily Bread.

Most recently, after receiving a challenge from the local bar association, our firm took an afternoon off from work and worked together to prepare more than fifty meals for Grassroots Crisis Intervention. Grassroots Crisis Intervention operates a 24-hour general crisis hotline and walk-in counseling program, and is the first point of contact in Howard County for homeless services. We might have tasted some of our food before we packed it up, and we have to say … it was pretty good!
